What Are Genetic Resources?

Genetic resources refer to any material of plant, animal, microbial or other origin containing functional units of heredity, otherwise known as DNA and RNA

Discovering new genetic resources, or genes, is fundamental to the research and development of commercial products in a wide array of sectors including pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural, horticultural, and the rapidly evolving field of biotechnology.

Across the world, researchers and scientists are sampling life forms for their various uses and are discovering new ways to manipulate genes with cutting edge technologies. The result of such research can lead to the development of medicines, cosmetics, and plant varieties.

Biodiversity is a limitless reservoir of potential commercial products

Searching for and collecting samples of biodiversity is a process known as bioprospecting. The idea is that different life-forms harbor compounds or traits that can be useful in different products. The template for the synthesis of these products is found in the organism’s genetics. Thus, genetic material/information is a hot commodity. In seeking novel biological resources, such as medicines or crop varieties, companies sponsor bioprospecting expeditions.
